Plant based milk: Hemp seed milk

My this week’s discussion will have me fishing in troubled waters, but I’ll try to be cautious. A few years ago, I stumbled upon the page of a Canadian named Rick Simpson who makes oil from the buds of the cannabis plant. Rick Simpson Oil is not a branded product; that means no “Rick Simpson oil” for sale. On his website, he just explains how to make his namesake oil so people can make it themselves. The interesting thing about this is that the strain of the cannabis plant he uses has great anti-cancer activity (it’s different from the strain used for CBD oil that you all know) and many cancer patients are completely cured. At some point, I emailed him and he responded. This is how I learned that the cannabis plant is highly medicinal.

While on the medicinal plant series, I had an extremely strong urge to talk about this plant, but I changed my mind as its possession is illegal in Nigeria. My hopes are high, however, just as Rick Simpson has used bud oil to cure cancer and as other countries have legalized its use for medical purposes, our beloved country will one day study the use of this great gift of nature. Today I’m going to talk about hemp seeds. The seeds are imported into the country and sold in grocery stores. This gives me the assurance that the law against having the plant in your possession is not binding on the purchase of the seeds in grocery stores and use as food. Also, they are mostly seeds with shells that you can’t even plant. If you must make milk from the seeds, please do not try them locally to avoid problems. I want to say it openly that as a law abiding citizen of this great nation, I do not have the plant in my possession nor do I know anyone who plants it.

Can seed milk make you feel high? Not entirely. It’s the smoke from the plant that makes you feel high. Although hemp seeds come from the sativa cannabis plant, they have little or none of the psychoactive compound THC. Therefore, milk does not produce any mind-altering effects.

Milk is a popular plant-based alternative to cow’s milk that can be used in smoothies, teas and cereals. It is made from whole or shelled hemp seeds and is rich in high-quality plant protein, healthy fats and minerals. It has an earthy, nutty flavor and a creamy consistency. Most of the fat in hemp milk is essential unsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), which are essential for building new tissues and membranes in the body . Since hemp foods do not have phytoestrogen properties, they do not have an impact on estrogen levels one way or the other. However, they have a positive impact on hormonal health as they are full of fiber, minerals, vitamins and amino acids and essential fatty acids.

From a nutritional perspective, hemp seed milk ticks all the boxes. It is low in saturated fat. It has no sugar or cholesterol, is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids and provides a very strong source of omega 3,” says Ben Cooper, Brand Director of Good Hemp (Good Hemp is the first and largest producer of hemp milk in the UK). Rebecca Kerkenbush, a registered dietitian, discussed the fatty acids in hemp milk as having cholesterol-lowering abilities. She says that “linoleic acid (LA or omega-6) and alpha- linolenic (ALA or omega-3) are healthy essential fatty acids (unsaturated fats). Replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat can lower cholesterol levels.”

In her comments, Lisa Richards, nutritionist and author of The Candida Diet, says, “Hemp milk has joined the plant milk scene and is being proven to offer some unique benefits that other milk alternatives they may not have.”

Milk provides protein that your body can easily digest and use. It is one of the few complete proteins of plant origin, as it contains all the essential amino acids that humans need from food. Many people don’t know that the hemp seed is edible, so I won’t be doing this discussion justice if I don’t first talk about the hemp seed and its health benefits. Let’s see some of the benefits of seeds:

A great source of protein: Hemp seeds are considered a complete source of protein as they have all 20 amino acids, nine essential and two semi-essential. Our body cannot produce these amino acids on its own. In fact, they have the highest amount of Edestina protein in the entire world. Edestin is a highly active digestible form of active protein that results in efficient absorption of nutrients. They also have large amounts of albumin protein, the same protein that gives eggs their glory.

Scientific studies

In a study entitled “The seed of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.): nutritional quality and potential functionality for human health and nutrition”, by Farinon et al, the conclusion is that hemp seeds are characterized by the presence of different bioactives. compounds, among which are unique phenolics, as well as bioactive peptides with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antihypertensive, antiproliferative and hypocholesterolemic activities.

In a study titled “Thyroid hormone levels and metabolic changes after treating rats with hemp milk”, by Owska et al, the results obtained provide the first demonstration that after hemp milk, intragastric treatment and ad libitum leads to a significant reduction in serum triglycerides. and cholesterol content, including total, free and esterified forms of this sterol. In addition, a significant decrease in thyroid hormones was observed in experimental rats.

There are whole hemp seeds and there are shelled hemp seeds (also called hemp hearts or shelled). It is whole when the outer casing has not been removed. It is peeled when the crispy outer shell has been removed. Much of the fiber in a hemp seed is found in its hull or outer shell. Removing the husks presents a much cleaner ingredient that is tender, white, and has a nutty flavor instead of the green, bitter flavor typically associated with whole hemp seeds.

For good edible hemp seed, Canada is known for the best quality among hemp growing countries. This is not only because of the taste of the hemp strain used by Canadian farmers, but also because of the strict restrictions imposed by the Canadian government. You may want to check your label to see where your hemp seed is grown before purchasing it at a grocery store.

Wash the hemp seeds, put in the blender, add a little water and mix. sift it The whitish water you have strained is your milk.
