New Study Reveals Hemp’s Potential to Combat Disease-Carrying Mosquitoes
Recent research has unveiled a groundbreaking use for hemp leaf extract, rich in CBD, as a potential insecticide against yellow fever mosquitoes. This study highlights the versatility of hemp products, suggesting that they could play a crucial role in saving millions of lives by targeting mosquito larvae, including strains resistant to conventional insecticides. “Mosquitoes are one of the deadliest animals in the world, mainly because as adults they serve as vectors of disease,” said Erick Martinez Rodriguez, the lead author of the study and a graduate student in entomology at Ohio State University.
Targeting Vulnerable Mosquito Larvae
Controlling mosquito populations at their larval stage is critical, as this is when they are most vulnerable. The study emphasizes the need for effective strategies to manage these pests, especially in light of the growing resistance some mosquito populations have developed against traditional insecticides. Inspired by earlier research that identified the bark of a Madagascar plant as a natural mosquito repellent, Rodriguez aimed to investigate whether hemp could serve as a safe alternative to synthetic biopesticides.
How the Study Was Conducted
To assess the toxic effects of hemp on mosquito larvae, Rodriguez and his team prepared air-dried hemp leaves by pulverizing them into a fine powder and soaking the powder in methanol for several weeks. This process allowed them to achieve the desired concentration of CBD. Once the methanol was removed, the extract was mixed with the larvae’s food to analyze its impact. The results were promising, revealing that the hemp extract was effective against both strains of mosquito larvae tested.
Surprising Efficacy of Hemp Extract
Rodriguez was taken aback by how little hemp extract was required to achieve significant mortality rates in the larvae. “If you compare the amount of hemp extract needed to kill 50% of the population to other synthetic conventional insecticides, it is on the high side,” he explained. “However, when compared to other natural extracts we have tested in our lab, only a relatively low amount is required to produce high mortality values in larvae.” The study found that CBD could lead to 100% mortality in the larvae over time, with varying concentrations resulting in different rates of mortality.
Understanding CBD’s Safety Profile
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a non-psychoactive compound found in the hemp plant, which is a variety of Cannabis sativa that typically contains low levels of THC, the compound responsible for the high associated with cannabis. Beyond its potential as an insecticide, CBD has numerous medicinal and household applications, sparking interest in its safety profile. Peter Piermarini, co-author of the study, noted, “CBD is a compound that appears to be safe for people and our companion animals to ingest.” This raises intriguing questions about its effects on non-target insects, such as butterflies and honey bees.
