BUCKHANNON – As summer approaches and autumn begins to set in, local hemp company Moon Flower Hemp concludes its third harvest and prepares for weeks of post-harvest work.
Located in the hills of Upshur County, the Moon Flower Hemp team planted more than 2,500 hemp plants in April. The plants were transplanted from the greenhouse to the expansive fields weeks later, where they bloomed to more than 5 feet in height for the next five months. When the hemp plant matures in late summer, it blooms and produces shoots with high percentages of cannabinoids, known for their countless medical benefits.
Moon Flower grows hemp plants with large amounts of CBD (cannabidiol) and low amounts of Delta-9 THC (tetrahrydrocannabidiol), as the legal limit for Delta-9 THC content is less than 0.1%. D9 THC is the cannabinoid grown for what is known as “marijuana”.
Now that Moon Flower has harvested its plants, the flower (also known as buds) will be cut by hand from each stock. Some shoots will go to their smoked product line, and the rest will undergo C02 extraction, which separates CBD oil from plant material. The oil is then used to make products from its extensive line, including groceries, tinctures, ointments, and more.
Moon Flower Hemp is co-owned by Buckhannon’s native sisters, Riley Queen (23) and Macie Queen (22), who made their dreams come true in 2019. His team has expanded to 10 people who play a key role in his success. Within his team are his parents, Jason and Jamie Queen, who have helped from the beginning to make the operation a success.
