New Research Highlights CBD Over THC for Anxiety Management

Recent research from the University of Colorado Boulder has shed light on the effectiveness of cannabis products high in CBD (cannabidiol) for alleviating anxiety. The study, which involved 300 participants, indicates that CBD may provide relief from anxiety symptoms more effectively than THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)-dominant products, and with fewer side effects. This finding comes at a time when anxiety disorders affect one in five adults in the United States, making it the most prevalent mental health issue in the country.

The Study: A Groundbreaking Approach

Published in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, this study is notable for being the first randomized trial to assess the impact of commercially available cannabis on anxiety symptoms. Senior author Cinnamon Bidwell, an associate professor in psychology and neuroscience, remarked on the clarity of the short-term effects observed. “CBD was associated with tension and anxiety relief with limited harm,” she stated, emphasizing the need for more data to understand any long-term benefits.

Why People Turn to Cannabis

Adults frequently cite anxiety as one of the top reasons for using cannabis, alongside sleep issues and pain management. However, previous research has produced mixed results regarding its effectiveness. Some studies suggest that high-THC products might exacerbate anxiety over time, while others indicate that combining CBD with THC could mitigate some negative effects, such as paranoia and impairment.

Study Methodology: A Unique Approach

The research team recruited 300 individuals with anxiety, of whom 258 had previously used cannabis. Participants were assigned to use one of three cannabis products: a THC-dominant strain (24% THC, 1% CBD), a CBD-dominant strain (1% THC, 24% CBD), or a balanced strain (12% THC, 12% CBD). Due to federal restrictions on cannabis research at college campuses, participants purchased their assigned products from designated dispensaries and used them off-campus.

Over a four-week period, participants were allowed to use their assigned products as often as they wished, with an average usage of three times per week. Researchers set up a mobile laboratory to evaluate participants before and after they consumed cannabis.

Impressive Findings: CBD Shines in Anxiety Relief

At the end of the study, all groups reported a decrease in anxiety, but those using cannabis products experienced a more significant reduction compared to those who did not use cannabis. Notably, participants using CBD-dominant products reported the most improvement. They experienced less tension immediately after use and were less likely to feel paranoid compared to those using THC-dominant strains.

Gregory Giordano, a professional research assistant at CUChange, noted, “Our findings suggest that THC did not increase anxiety long-term and that CBD-dominant forms of cannabis were associated with acute tension reduction that may translate to longer-term reductions in anxiety symptoms.”

The Science Behind CBD’s Efficacy

Bidwell highlighted that CBD has stronger anti-inflammatory properties than THC. This suggests that CBD-dominant products may help reduce anxiety by alleviating inflammation in the brain and nervous system. Interestingly, even a small amount of THC (1%) can positively influence mood.

While there are numerous prescription medications available for anxiety, many come with unwanted side effects and the potential for dependency. The study indicates that CBD products could offer a meaningful alternative for adults seeking to manage anxiety without the risks associated with THC or traditional medications. Bidwell stressed the need for further research but expressed optimism about the potential of CBD for anxiety relief.
